This is a very nice tutorial on Panel Shading...

This is a technique I have never tried, but always wanted to learn. I remember one particular model builder at an old forum, whom did this with pretty much all his models...specifically, aircraft. The closest I ever got to the effect was chalk washes, which I still love...but this goes beyond just the recessed panel lines, and ‘dirties up’ within and outside the recesses especially, onto the top surface. Thin layers of topcoat color application (airbrushed, of course) gradually covers up the majority, but acts as transparent surface color, allowing the weathered nooks, crannies, and surround to cone through. This, bringing more realism to your subject.

Side note: the second musical interlude — the Taiko drums — is from the new, Battlestar Galactica!
